W1AW or Bust – July 20

Local Amateurs will be taking a step back in time and visiting a monument of radio history. In other words: ROAD TRIP!!!

Amateur radio enthusiasts from Butler County and the surrounding area are planning a trip to the historic W1AW Hiram Percy Maxim Memorial Station in Newington, Connecticut.

Depart: Thursday, July 20th
ARRL Tour: Friday, July 21st
Return: Saturday, July 22nd

We will be taking the AMTRAK train from the Pittsburgh area to New Haven, Ct. We will be staying at a hotel in New Haven CT overnight. In the morning (Friday) we will rent cars and drive up to Newington and the ARRL. We will get a tour of the new ARRL laboratory and have an opportunity to operate as W1AW! We will go out to dinner Friday night back in New Haven. Saturday morning we will be getting up bright and early to catch the train back home.

Each person coming along on the trip is responsible for making their own hotel reservations and buying their own train tickets.

Hotel Reservations:
Most of the group will be staying at the New Haven Village Suites, telephone (203) 777-5337.
When making your reservation ask for the “Skyview Deal” to receive a special room rate that was negotiated for this event.  Those rates should be approximately $155 to $165 per night.

The hotel will be providing transportation between the train and the hotel (twice) for a fee of approximately $100.00. We will pitch in to cover that cost. Depending on how many people are traveling, a number of drivers will rent cars Friday morning and we will drive the gang up to Newington for fun and games. We will drive back to New Haven to have dinner and drop off the rental cars. Rental car costs will be shared between riders.

* It is best to make all of your arrangements ASAP as the train will fill up and
prices will increase as time gets closer. Also, the hotel may run short on rooms despite having a block of 20 reserved. Do it early!
